As you enter the room you see a young orchan in armEL-DB.comor, studying a scroll. You approach him cautiously.

*He puts his scroll down and picks up a sword* Hello, have you come to train today? I need a partner.

No, some other time
*He looks disappointed, but puts down his sword and returns to studying his scroll.* Whenever you like. I don't get to train as much as I like since attending this school. There are many other classes that students are required to take which take up so much time. They are interesting but I came here to learn the skill of using magic in combat. One day I will be a truly great warrior.

My name is Raum. I came to Tarsengaard Magic School from North Redmoon Island.

Why be a warrior?
You might as well stand and fight because if you run, you will only die tired. *He chuckles* I'm sorry, I couldn't resist, it's an old orchan joke. But to answer honestly, to be a warrior is a great thing. It is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is an endless struggle that will go on to the very last breath.

Nobody is born a warrior, as nobody is born average. You make yourself into one or the other. I will make myself into a great warrior someday, like my father and his father before him for as long as time has been. When I am home I train almost everyday.

Sounds hard.
Yes, but it is worth it. Nothing in this world is a gift, what there is to be learned must be learned the hard way. Only as a warrior can you withstand the path of knowledge. Life is an endless challenge, but challenges can't be good or bad, they are only challenges. Each will make you stronger, each will make you faster, each will make you smarter, each will make you more.

Knowledge? Just go kick butt.
Knowledge is the cornerstone of all strength. Without knowledge, skill cannot be focused. Without skill, strength cannot be tested. warrior isn't just a mindless sword slashing killer. To have the truest advantage in combat one must be as well rounded as possible.

Why are warriors special?
Only a warrior chooses pacifism; others are condemned to it. There is great strength in that. A warrior takes responsibility for his acts, even the most trivial. For a true warrior there is never a doubt in his mind that he has chosen the right action. If you are alive at the end of your endeavor, your actions were right. If you didn't have to draw your sword, well sometimes that can be for the better.

Why do you work so hard?
Some say the more you sweat in training, the less you will bleed in battle. Others will tell you that we do not rise to the level of our expectations, but fall to the level of our training. Personally, I think that given enough time, anyone can master the physical. With enough knowledge, anyone may become wise. It is the true warrior who can master both.

That is another reason I decided to attend magic school. I can master the physical on my own, but the knowledge...well there is more here at the school than at home. Professor Gniles has aided greatly in my understanding of the finer points of battle.

You must be good!
Don't let size and appearance fool you. Some warriors look fierce, but are mild. Some seem timid, but are vicious. You have to look beyond appearances. You may meet my friend Arbella while you explore the school. You wouldn't know it to look at her or talk to her, but she is a very skilled fighter. I believe that she could be just as good a warrior as any orchan.

She is bold of heart and naturally gifted in combat and magic though she is just a little gnome. She also has a strong connection to the element of wind. Although she practices here at the school, I have never seen her use her skills for any other purpose. She keeps a very strong rein on her emotions because she fears how powerful she is becoming.

I admire her for her control. Nothing is so strong as gentleness, nothing is so gentle as real strength. A warrior seeks to act rather than talk, but Arbella insists on talk first. I don't think she will ever be a true warrior, or that she wishes to be one. Professor Gniles has taken personal interest in Arbella and had her specially added to the magical combat course.

Can you use an element?
Not as well as some here that I have seen, but I do seem to have some sort of connection to fire. It is weak and I have not been trained to use it well. *He steps over to the lEL-DB.comava pit and moves his hand in circular motions over it. At first nothing happens, but then very slowly the lava in the pit begins to swirl in the same pattern as Raum's hand.*

You see? It takes a lot of concentration for just this small feat.

You know a lot about warriors
It is rare to find an orchan who doesn't, especially males. From the time we are very small we are raised in the ways of warriors. As an orchan, you are measured in society by your strength, bravery and heroism.

We hunt and we fight with the members of our own tribe, and sometimes war with other tribes. Many of our leaders are elected in competitions of bravery and strength. Sometimes these competitions go to the death, so knowing a lot about combat is a way of life for most.

Tell me about combat magic.
There are many spells you can use during combat. I am studying about some here. *He indicates his scroll* The most basic of spells are the Heal and Remote Heal spells. Obviously the Heal spell heals yourself and the Remote Heal spell heals others. There are offensive spells like Poison, Harm, and Mana Drain and defensive spells like Shield and Magic Immunity.

Once your magic is strong enough it can be used to aid in normal contact combat. There are also magic items that can be used in combat that will improve odds. A unicorn medallion will increase your defense skills, a moon medallion will increase your accuracy and your armor. Professor Donegal is trying to convince me that potions have their place in combat as well, but I'm not completely convinced.

Finding the right combination of armor, weapon, and magic items can be a science sometimes. They could have a whole course dedicated to it.

He teaches potions here and while I find Spirit Restoration potions helpful during combat, some potions are merely a liquid version of a magic spell. I can see why some peoplEL-DB.come would find the performance-enhancing potions useful, but I prefer not to rely on them since they can wear off at the most inopportune time, and then you're stuck, or dead.

Performance-enhancing potions?
Potions of reasoning, physique, defense, coordination, wildness, will, vitality, attack, accuracy, and evasion are some of the potions I'm referring to. While they boost those attributes and skills for a while, they wear off all too soon. For me, I'll concede the point about spirit restoration and healing potions being useful in combat, but I'll not use the rest.

He teaches the magical combat course and is a living lesson of not judging someone by size and appearance. Most of the staff and students here call him Professor G. He is a dwarf but is as fierce as any orchan in battle. He has already taught me many valuable lessons.

Unfortunately for his students, a lot of his lessons are learned through intimate relations with his highly skilled quarterstaff. And that's if you are lucky and he doesn't happen to have a sword!

Goodbye. May the sacred flames of wisdom and bravery always burn within your soul.
